Workshop Overview
Since its inception, the flexibility of EMDR has enabled the partnership between a more neurobiological stance with other therapeutic perspectives, such as psychodynamic, behavioral, relational and systemic. As therapists and researchers gain more experience, EMDR therapy has evolved to encompass not only traumatized clients, but also additional clienteles, expanding beyond what is typically acknowledged as PTSD-based psychopathologies. Some examples include personality disorders, chronic pain, OCD, addictions etc. The expansion has been, however, still restricted to individual 1:1 interventions.
Meanwhile, special group protocols were developed, but are mostly restricted to single events, such as post-catastrophe aid. Both Nacho Jarero and Elan Shapiro have become celebrated pioneers in this field, and their contributions to wide-scale use of EMDR is incommensurate. Though these group interventions have shown evidence-based effectiveness, they are usually restricted to a specific theme, and exchange of experiences among participants is limited.
The promising field of group-work EMDR calls for additional expansion and research. As a result of the pandemic, the demand for mental health services due to imposed isolation has increased drastically. Social restrictions, coupled with countless losses (freedom of movement, deaths of loved ones, jobs, social interactions, long Covid sequelae), have impacted the mourning process, as well as the preservation of cognitive, emotional and social skills. Particularly in highly populated countries, we lack the mental health providers to tend to the therapeutic needs of the collective. Though group psychotherapy has been practiced for many years, it has not yet been regarded as an adjunctive approach to EMDR.
General Objectives
- Address this intersection between EMDR and ongoing group psychotherapy
- Provide basic tools, so EMDR trained therapists consider including the practice of group interventions as an option to their clientele
- Amplify the therapeutic reach of their practices
- Provide mental health support to a larger number of clients, thus directly affecting the quality of lives of families and the community at large.
Specific objectives
- Acquire new concepts, such as collective AIP, collective dual awareness, collective PC
- Identify appropriate client referrals for group work Acquire strategies for setting-up a psychotherapy group
- Describe and negotiate ingredients of a collective code of ethics Contrast individual and collective phases of the EMDR protocol
- Acknowledge the advantages of collective interweaves and when to use them Gain a more systemic perspective of clients
